What do I have to do to get promoted is one of the most common coaching conversations I have with young leaders, as many of them struggle with taking charge of their career. In the article I will share with 7 tips to getting promoted.
Let me start by pointing out that promotions are not a given - they are earned - and assuming you deserve a promotion is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. With this in mind, here are some tips to help get you on the right path.
Have the Talk
One of the things I have noticed with many young leaders is that they leave their career to chance rather than making the changes they need to make. With this in mind, having the talk is one of the most important things you can do to get promoted.
What is having the talk? Simply put, it’s having a conversation with your manager about your career progression. There are two primary reasons why this is so important:
- It lets you gain some clarity on what behaviours, skills and performance are required in order to deserve a promotion.
- It lets your manager know how important career progression is to you, and sends a clear message that they need to take it seriously.
Model the Role
There’s no point talking about career progression if you cannot demonstrate that you deserve one. With this in mind it’s imperative that you consistently demonstrate the right behaviours, develop exceptional skills and consistently deliver results.
- Be a consummate professional.
- Lead by example.
Go the Extra Mile
Demonstrating the right behaviours, developing exceptional skills and consistently deliver results will certainly put you on the right path, but if your organisation employs the bell curve, it may not be enough. With this is mind it’s important that you go the extra mile and do more than is asked of you.
There are a host of additional things you can do to demonstrate the value you bring to the organisation, including:
- Asking for additional responsibilities.
- Offering to help other teams or departments.
- Volunteering for CSR initiatives.
Be Two Steps Ahead
The world is experiencing high levels of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity as technology impacts jobs. In order to future proof yourself, it’s important that you understand how a VUCA world is impacting your industry and develop the behaviours and skills needed for now, and in the not too distant future.
Seek Regular Feedback
How you perceive your behaviors, skills and performance may not always be how other perceive them. This is why regular feedback from your manager and peers will help to know whether you are on the right track. It also helps to remove any ambiguity when appraisal time comes around.
Putting the needs of those around you first and helping them to develop and perform at their best is a surefire way to demonstrate the value you bring to your organisation.
Build a Network
The more people who know you and the value you bring to the organisation, the more likely your name will be discussed when opportunities arise.
No… I’m not suggesting that you should be an ass kisser, but I am suggesting that you get to know different people across your organisation and learn as much as you can from them as it will help you to better understand the organisation and the various challenges that it faces.
